The heart of Amsterdam in Motion is a 200-square-metre model with more than 30,000 mini buildings on a scale of 1:1300. This enormous miniature city is illuminated in a 15-minute journey through time with projections, sound, voice-overs and animations that take you from Amsteldorp in 1275 to the modern metropolis of today, and even further: the future of Amsterdam is depicted.
Following the spectacular display on the ground floor, the exhibition on the first floor invites you to consider and reflect on current urban themes: housing, fashion, migration, innovation, ecology, and the shared future of the city. The interactive design challenges visitors not only to observe, but also to connect with the urban narratives themselves.
Amsterdam in Motion is located in the Zuiveringshal Oost, in the Westergas area. This location has been carefully chosen: an industrial but characteristic monument, in the middle of a creative cultural area where history, art and innovation come together. The hall, a listed building, adds an extra dimension to the experience: rugged, authentic and yet accessible.
Whether you know Amsterdam well or are visiting for the first time, this is something new: you will see the city from a bird's eye view like never before, discover hidden stories, and get an idea of how Amsterdam is developing and what choices are being made for the future. It is suitable for all ages, schoolchildren, students, local residents, tourists, anyone interested in urban development, design, history or simply sensory experiences.
