De Pijp is now known as the nicest student neighbourhood in Amsterdam. In the 19th century, de Pijp was built for Amsterdam's urban expansion. Due to the population explosion, a belt of new houses was built here to accommodate more people. Back then, people mainly saw this area as cheap revolutionary construction. But so now the Pijp is a lot more popular and beautiful than back then. It is full of great terraces and shops, but there is also much more to experience. For instance, you have the Albert Cuyp market which attracts many visitors every day, or the Heineken Experience which is also fun to visit. So you can spend a whole day in the Pijp. For instance, first stroll through the market and have lunch at one of the many catering establishments, and then go to a museum or the Heineken Experience. Where you can end the day with a drink at one of the famous spots in the Pijp; the Marie Heinekenplein, the Gerard Douplein or the Frans Halsstraat where many cafés can be found. Besides the above sights, you can also stroll through the park, the Sarphatipark is very beautiful and fun to stroll through.
De Pijp is also home to metro station de Pijp, this is a relatively new metro station built during the construction of Amsterdam's North-South line. One of the most famous markets in the Netherlands is located in the middle of the Pijp area; the Albert Cuyp market. It is located on the Albert Cuypstraat. This market is there 6 days a week, from Monday to Saturday, excluding public holidays. This is a well-known tourist attraction, but plenty of locals also come here to do their shopping. People come here to do their shopping, but there are also plenty of market stalls where you can't buy food or drinks, as the Albert Cuyp market is also known for the amount of substances they offer. When you're in the Pijp area, you can't actually skip the Albert Cuyp market just to stroll over and buy something from someone. When visiting the Albert Cuypmarkt, you can also easily park in one of the Q-Park car parks that are within walking distance of it.
Another fun fact about the Albert Cuyp market; the statue of Andre Hazes also stands on the Albert Cuyp, it is crowded on his birth or death day by his fans. The reason the statue is on the Albert Cuyp street is because Hazes used to spend his childhood in the Pijp area, his singing talent was also discovered at this spot.
