The monumental building is located in the heart of Amsterdam, close to Waterlooplein. It is a museum housed in Rembrandt van Rijn's old home in the Jodenbreestraat. He lived here from 1639 to 1658. Rembrandt's atelier and art shop were also located in his house. At the museum, you can experience how Rembrandt van Rijn lived and see where he created his masterpieces.
In the following years, the building was used several times as a residence and rebuilt. At the beginning of the 20th century, the building was in poor condition. In honor of the 300th anniversary of his birth in 1906, the municipality of Amsterdam bought the building in 1907. After this, it was donated to the Het Rembrandthuis foundation. Four years later, the museum was opened. Queen Wilhelmina was one of the first visitors.
Museum Rembrandthuis is the only museum in the world dedicated entirely to Rembrandt. In this house, he lived and worked for almost 20 years and became the greatest artist of all. You walk through his home and take a look at his famous studio. The property has been redecorated based on an inventory after Rembrandt's bankruptcy in 1656.
At the museum, visitors get a picture of Rembrandt van Rijn's daily life and what a residential house looked like in the 17th century. There are also a number of works of art from the 17th century on display. These are by Rembrandt's teacher Pieter Lastman and his pupils Ferdinand Bol and Govert Flinck, among others. In the modern museum wing, temporary exhibitions include works of art by Rembrandt himself as well as artists of his time and contemporary artists.
