Royal Theatre Carré is a theatre in Amsterdam and is located on the Amstel river. It originally had a different name, namely Circus Carré.
From 1879, the Royal Dutch Circus Oscar Carré gave winter performances in a wooden building. After a major fire in a wooden theatre in Vienna that killed many people, Carré was given a stone building. The new building was soon called the Carré Stone Circus and was mainly used for circus performances during the winter months. From 1893, the theatre was used for all kinds of popular entertainment. From 1907 to 1928, the theatre constantly balanced on the brink of bankruptcy. After the appointment of a new director in the 1930s, the tide turned and the theatre became successful.
Today, Carré is mainly used for musicals, pop concerts, music, theatre and cabaret performances. The World Christmas Circus takes place at Carré every year.
This extraordinary theatre has had a 130-year history as a circus and stage arena, opera house, ballet stage, (ice) revue palace, boxing hall and church building. Over time, the theatre may have taken numerous guises, but the palatial décor and colorful character of the halls have remained the same. Also, today the theatre is still known for its flexibility and the management still uses the foresight with which Oscar Carré made the theatre great back then. So a night out to the Royal Theatre Carré is a special night out, you can enjoy the beautiful auditorium and the view over the Amstel river during your night out.
