De Dageraad is a world-famous social housing estate in Berlage’s Plan Zuid, designed by the architects Michel de Klerk and Piet Kramer in the Amsterdam School style. The estate was built between 1919 and 1923 on behalf of the socialist housing cooperative De Dageraad and comprises 294 flats and 6 shops. The name refers to the symbolism of the rising sun and to the socialist movement that was flourishing in Amsterdam at that time.
The architects were commissioned to design every aspect of the streetscape. In addition to the street-facing façades, they also designed the rear façades and floor plans, resulting in a form of total art in which beauty took centre stage. The expressionist façades and magnificent ornamentation are recognisable throughout the neighbourhood. A stroll through the area is therefore an attraction in its own right.
Museum De Dageraad is the second museum in the Spaarndammerbuurt, after Museum Het Schip, and is situated in the Dageraad complex in Amsterdam-Zuid. It hosts a variety of permanent and temporary exhibitions. The museum is also the starting point for many walking and cycling tours through the neighbourhood.
