Where other cities celebrate carnival, Den Bosch takes on a role. Oeteldonk is a reversal: everyone is equal, no one is more important than anyone else, and the normal hierarchy is turned upside down. The mayor hands over power to Prince Amadeiro, and the city becomes a village full of symbolism, playful protocol, and recognizable colours: red, white, and yellow.
In Oeteldonk, you won't hear anyone say “Alaaf”; anyone who does is giving themselves away as an outsider. Here, there are different chants, different songs, different customs. Everything has its place, from the farmers' smocks with emblems to the role of the Court Chapel and all the youth rituals.
In Den Bosch, you don't dress up as a pirate or superhero. Here, you wear a farmer's smock, richly decorated with annual emblems, frogs and other Oeteldonk symbols. Over this, you wear a red, white and yellow scarf, thick enough for February days and recognizable enough to immediately identify you as a member of the village. Those who don't wear a smock opt for a black uniform jacket, also extensively decorated. The result: a walking parade of identity and tradition.
What makes Oeteldonk special is that the entire celebration takes place in the streets. Squares such as the Parade, the Market, and the Uilenburg are transformed into open-air stages filled with bands, brass bands, dancing groups, and chance encounters. You walk, you sing, you talk, you laugh; Oeteldonk is a social celebration where strangers become friends.
The protocol is monitored by the Oeteldonkse Club van 1882, the official organization behind the festival. They safeguard traditions, lead the parades and determine the annual motto. An invitation that perfectly matches the open atmosphere of the village: everyone can participate, as long as you have your heart in the right place and respect the rules.
