The Citadel was built in 1637, commissioned by the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands, shortly after Den Bosch was recaptured from the Spaniards during the Eighty Years' War. The fortress had to prevent the city from falling into enemy hands again. To make way for construction, part of the old Mariënburg monastery was demolished. Its location on the water of the Dieze river was strategically chosen: from here it was possible to both guard the city and keep possible enemies at bay. In the centuries that followed, De Citadel remained a military fortress until it lost its function in the 20th century.
Today, De Citadel is a fascinating place where you can almost literally touch history. Among other things, the building houses the Brabants Historisch Informatie Centrum (BHIC), which manages archives and exhibitions on the reign of North Brabant. During a visit, you will see impressive fortress walls overlooking the city and the Bossche Broek. You can take a historical tour where guides will tell you about the fort's military past, sieges and secrets. There are exhibitions in cooperation with the BHIC on Brabant history, war, government and more.
The open courtyard of The Citadel often hosts cultural activities, lectures or small festivals. You can also walk around the fort, taking in stunning views of the city and the water via bastions, bridges and quaysides.
The Citadel is a unique place where history meets tranquillity. Whether you like architecture, city defence, culture or just a nice walk: this hidden gem on the edge of the city tells stories that span centuries. A historical highlight for anyone who really wants to get to know Den Bosch.
