The Illustrious Brotherhood of Our Lady was founded in 1318 with the aim of promoting Marian worship. Over the centuries, the brotherhood grew into a distinguished, influential institution with members from the elite of church, nobility and politics. Dutch kings Willem I, II and III and King Willem-Alexander were also admitted as “honorary swan brothers”. The fraternity house, built in 1847 in neo-classical style, still exudes that same atmosphere of mysticism, tradition and distinction.
A visit to the Swan Brothers' House is a fascinating journey through time, revealing the mysterious world of rituals, brotherhood and art. You will find historical period rooms richly decorated with furniture, paintings and objects from the 17th to 19th centuries. An impressive treasury with original documents, precious relics, manuscripts and medieval manuscripts. Musical history with pieces by famous brother Hieronymus Bosch and other composers from Bossche.
