The square was created in the 17th century on the site of the former castle gardens of the Binnenhof. Inspired by the classical squares of Paris and Brussels, it was given a geometric layout and a stately appearance. In the centre stands a statue of Johan de Witt, the statesman who symbolises the Dutch Republic and the tensions that accompany democracy.
Impressive buildings surround the square: the historic Mauritshuis, the elegant gateway to the Binnenhof and several ministries. Here, you are literally surrounded by the places where decisions are made that affect the entire country. At the same time, it is also simply a pleasant meeting place: students, civil servants, politicians and day trippers sit together on the terraces.
What makes the Plein unique is that it is both a stage and a back door. You can enjoy a beer on the terrace of a café where a cabinet meeting was discussed earlier that day. The contrasts make it lively: haute cuisine next to local pubs, parliamentary journalists next to tourists with a city guide. In the evening, the Plein transforms into a place for informal conversations, drinks and spontaneous encounters. The cafés and restaurants are popular with policymakers, lobbyists and locals alike. It is a place where worlds continue to collide.
Whether you come for the political theatre, the architecture, lunch under the chestnut trees or simply a beautiful starting point for a walk through The Hague, the Plein is the place where The Hague's history and daily life come together. No other place better shows what The Hague is: a city of consultation, style and stories.
