Inside the thick walls of Fort Saint Peter you will find cannon embrasures, a well, interior galleries and embrasures. Accompanied by a guide, you will enter the underground passages connecting the fort to the marl caves of Mount St Peter. During the tour, you will hear fascinating anecdotes, such as how the fort bravely held out against French shelling in 1794 - where even exhibits in the marl caves remained visible.
After decades of decay, the fort was thoroughly restored by Natuurmonumenten between 2006 and 2012, with some ruined parts deliberately preserved as historical reminders. The vegetation on the chalky walls harbours rare plants such as wall snapdragon and barnweed, and bats hibernate in the old vaults.
A visit to Fort Saint Peter is not just another outing, but a journey through time, earth and fortification art - with endless views as a reward. Perfect for lovers of history, photogenic moments and adventurous discoveries.
