In the middle of the square is Maastricht's 17th-century City Hall. Built between 1659 and 1664, it was designed by Pieter Post. It is an example of Dutch classicist architecture, but with a southern Dutch flair. Its ornate facade, tower clock and wide staircases make it a real eye-catcher, especially when sunlight falls on the marlstone. Inside, the city marries itself to its residents and visitors - every day.
On Wednesdays and especially on Fridays, the square turns into a motley collection of stalls, shouting market vendors and shopping locals. You will find flowers, cheese, clothes, fish, spices and everything in between. The atmosphere is loose and cosy and the smell of fresh syrup waffles or Belgian waffles wafts across the square. On other days it is quieter, but never quiet. The Market is always alive.
At the edges of the square, you will find a mix of terraces, cafés and brasseries and snack shops. Whether you fancy a quick fry, a coffee in the sun or lunch with a view of City Hall. There is always a place where you can settle down for a while. Especially on sunny days, it's see and be seen here, with a drink within reach and the square as a theatre.
The Markt is right in between the shopping streets of the Grote Staat and the more cultural Sphinx Quarter. Walking from the Meuse to the city centre, or from the station towards the north side of the city, you automatically end up here. The square is a kind of crossroads, not only of roads, but also of people, atmospheres and times.
Beneath the stones of the Market Square lies a history of centuries. Once a place of commerce, justice and popular entertainment. Over time, the buildings changed, cellars were built and the square was repaved, but its function remained: gathering. And you can still feel that, even if you just cycle across it or run an errand.
