The undisputed star of the collection is Bèr, the imposing Mosasaur skull once discovered in Mount St Peter. Together with species enjoyed by Carlo and Lars, he represents a time when a subtropical sea dominated this region, around 66-70 million years ago. Besides these behemoths, you will also find fossils of giant sea turtles - peculiarities from the Maastricht chalk collection, one of the richest in Europe.
Three permanent exhibitions take you from the Cretaceous Sea to today's nature in Limburg. Botany, geology and entomology come alive in schowcases with insect gardens, bird calls, bee swarms and living collection, including the 1913 museum garden.
The museum building itself is a story in itself. Originally a monastery, built in Maasland Renaissance style with Renaissance touch and now with modern facilities such as lifts, wheelchair-accessible routes and a fine museum café where you will find rest after your journey of discovery.
Whether you come with children for more interactive treasure hunts and workshops in the ScienceLab, or as an adult are fascinated by the changing exhibitions such as “Ontmoet Bèr” or themes around whales, spiders or microscopic details - the museum makes nature accessible and surprising.
This museum may not be huge, but its heart beats like a voyage of discovery. Unique, historical and curiosity-inducing - at the Natural History Museum Maastricht, you will discover the hidden layers of South Limburg.
