The City Hall was built in the 17th century, at a time when Maastricht was governed by two powers: the prince-bishop of Liège and the States General of the Republic. To do justice to that divided power, architect Pieter Post designed a building that exudes symmetry - from the double staircase to the balanced facade layout. Even the bricks reflect the compromise on which the city was built. The building was commissioned in 1664 and has since survived wars, revolutions and countless generations of Maastricht people. The bell tower is equipped with a carillon that plays daily melodies over the square - a subtle music that you almost don't notice, but that imperceptibly influences the city's atmosphere.
Although still used as an administrative centre, Maastricht City Hall is partly open to the public - especially during Open Monument Days, guided tours or weddings. Those who cross the threshold enter a world of historical splendour. The Citizens' Hall is a feast for the eyes, with its high ceilings, chandeliers and paintings that tell centuries-old stories. In the Council Chamber, you see how government and history come together - you can almost feel the presence of the many mayors who made their decisions here. The wedding hall, with its golden accents and warm wood, is a popular place for weddings. Many couples consciously choose this venue for its romantic, almost royal atmosphere.
The town hall literally stands in the middle of the Market Square, surrounded by cosy restaurants, market stalls and shops. Every Wednesday and Friday there is a market and you will see the square filled with colourful stalls. The City Hall is a vivid reminder of the Golden Age, built by one of the Netherlands' greatest architects. Here you will discover how Maastricht incorporated its dual power structure in stone. The atmosphere inside is warm and majestic, perfect for a historically themed tour or an unforgettable wedding. In addition, you can walk to the Vrijthof, the Sint-Servaas bridge or the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein in a few minutes.
