What makes this park unique is the ix of nature and history. Here, you literally walk along and over parts of the old city wall, overlooking towers, gates and bastions. Especially around the Helpoort, the oldest city gate in the Netherlands, you get the feeling you have landed in a film set. The stones are weathered, the wall is overgrown and yet everything still stands firm. Between the trees and bushes, cannons, memorial stones and historical statues suddenly pop up.
But the City Park is more than a textbook full of history. It is also just a nice place to relax. The wide lawns invite you to lie down, picnic or play a game of frisbee, and geese stroll along the ponds as if they were running the city. Children feed ducks, students hang out in the grass with music and older ones read on benches under the trees.
At the back of the park, past the old Waldeck Bastion, you will find a quieter part with flowerbeds, bridges and winding paths. In spring everything turns a soft green and in autumn the park shines in shades of gold. The transition to the Jeker, the stream that meanders along the park, also makes the area lively and charming. On hot days, children cool their feet in the shallow water or people find a quiet spot under the trees.
The Maastricht city park is not a rectilinear English garden or tightly laid-out square. It consists of different zones, an old section with walls and statues, a park-like middle section and quiet corners along the Jeker.
What makes City Park especially attractive is that it is alive. It is not just a place to walk through on your way to something else, it is the destination. Whether you come for a morning walk, a lunch break, a book in the sun, a game with the kids or a chance encounter with a family of geese: the park has room for everything.
