Plans date back to 1998-2001, but construction did not start until 2009. Rotterdam municipality raised the alarm, got involved as a tenant and gave the development a boost. Four years later, in November 2013, De Rotterdam opened: with 150 metres of height, 44 floors and 162,000m2 of living, working, hotel, and leisure space, it is the largest building in the Netherlands.
Below awaits the plinth - a public meeting place filled with cafés, shops and gateways to offices, hotels and flats. Above are three towers: an office skyscraper, a residential building and a hotel and conference module. Different functions share fitness, dining and meeting rooms: people live and work in one lively complex.
The three tower protrudes slightly forward and backward from a height of 90 metres - a smart move for wind stability and spectacular terraces. The diamond-shaped glossy façade reflects the river and the city, while staggered volumes make the building feel constantly new.
This ‘vertical’ city also follows sustainability principles: rainwater retention, natural ventilation, energy-efficient installations as well as green roofs. In addition, the site encourages the use of bicycle, tram and metro.
Walk in at the plinth, have a drink along the waterfront, climb the terraces, or admire the building from the Erasmus Bridge. The Rotterdam tells the story of a city that rose from ashes after World War II, boldly built a bold skyline, and boldly embraced new urban life.
