The opening exhibition, All Directions - Art That Moves You, presents works by more than 100 artists from all continents. Visitors can immerse themselves in various art forms, from paintings and sculptures to video projections and installations. Of particular note are the five world firsts by artists such as Beya Gille Gacha and Raquel van Haver, created especially for FENIX. There is also The Family of Migrants, a photo exhibition inspired by Edward Steichen's famous ‘Family of Man’. This exhibition features 194 photos by 136 photographers from 55 countries, capturing the diverse faces of migration.
The architectural centrepiece of FENIX is the Tornado, an impressive double-helix staircase designed by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects. This spiral staircase leads visitors to a panoramic vantage point atop the museum, with breathtaking views of the river Maas and Rotterdam.
Another striking installation is the Suitcase Maze, a labyrinth of suitcases containing personal migration stories. This interactive experience invites visitors to reflect on the emotions and memories associated with leaving a home and looking for a new beginning.
In addition, the ground floor houses Plein. This is a covered city square of 2,000 square metres. This space is intended for and by Rotterdammers, where events, workshops and other activities take place that reflect the city's diversity and creativity.
FENIX is more than a museum; it is a place of encounter, reflection and connection. A must-visit for anyone inspired in the stories behind migration and the power of art to tell these stories.
