The Museum of the Canals is a museum focused on the history of Amsterdam and its famous seventeenth-century canals. The museum is housed in a canal house on the Herengracht. You will be taken on a journey through 400 years of Amsterdam history. Inside the museum, you can follow a multimedia tour that takes you through five rooms. Each room introduces you to the history of Amsterdam's canals in a different way. Among other things, you will learn about the design and construction of the canals, life along the canals and the influence of the canals on Dutch culture.
In the permanent show, you will learn about the origins of Amsterdam, how the canals were build and what life was like along the canals. You travel through five rooms in which you see the canals and the city change around you. You also get a glimpse into the canal house of a wealthy citizen of old Amsterdam. These rooms show how people lived in Amsterdam. In spring, the Stiltetuin can also be visited and is worth a walk. Besides all the permanent sections, there is always a temporary exhibition showing, for example, the green history of the trees along the canals. The Museum of the Canals contributes to a social initiative. These include improving its wheelchair-friendly character and organizing activities for low-income families. In this way, the museum is accessible to everyone.
