Located on the waterfront in the centre of Amsterdam is the Scheepvaartmuseum. This museum is one of the world's most important maritime history collections with books, paintings, maps and navigational instruments up to 500 years old. Besides these pieces of maritime history, three ships can also be admired at the Scheepvaartmuseum. The first is the steamship Christiaan Brunings. This sailing monument is an icebreaker from 1900 that can be admired at the jetty of the Maritime Museum. The second ship is the King's sloop. This sloop was commissioned by King William 1 200 years ago and is the most ornate ship in the collection. Finally, it is a replica of the VOC ship Amsterdam. This iconic ship of 56 meter high, 48 meter long and 12 meter wide can be admired from afar, but if you want to see it up close, you can even enter the ship. Apart from the ships, the building itself is also of historical value. The monumental building, the Scheepvaartmuseum, was built in 1656 and used to be the warehouse of the Admiral of Amsterdam.
