During carnival, Breda becomes a village with its own atmosphere, its own language and even its own Prince. He is surrounded by pages, the jester and the Pliessie van 't Kielegat, characters you encounter everywhere in the city centre. The identity is strong and warm: in 't Kielegat, everything revolves around togetherness, volunteers, bands, float builders and revellers who come together to create one big folk festival.
Where Oeteldonk is known for its farmer's smock and protocols, Breda is more liberal but with its own style. The classic choice is a farmer's smock covered in emblems and a scarf in red and orange, the official colours of 't Kielegat. But otherwise, anything goes. Animal costumes, film characters, pyjamas, glittery dresses, the people of Breda celebrate carnival without a dress code but with plenty of expression. And that's exactly what makes the atmosphere so accessible.
Breda hosts several parades, both in the city and in the surrounding villages. In the city itself, the Grand Parade on Monday is the absolute highlight of the festivities. The parade traditionally departs from Haagdijk and winds its way through the city centre.
