The Oranjehotel was the nickname given to the Scheveningen prison during the Second World War. Between 1940 and 1945, the Germans held more than 25,000 people here for interrogation and trial. These were mostly members of the resistance, but also included Jews, Jehovah’s Witnesses, communists and black marketeers. Among the prisoners were well-known Dutch figures such as Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema, George Maduro and Titus Brandsma.
More than 250 people were executed by firing squad on the Waalsdorpervlakte after being taken from the Oranjehotel. The four volumes of the Books of the Dead list the names of 763 prisoners who lost their lives during the war. For many, the Oranjehotel was merely the start of a long journey through German prisons and concentration camps.
Following a major restoration and renovation, the Oranjehotel was opened as a memorial centre by King Willem-Alexander in September 2019. The authentic Cell 601, the only death cell still completely intact, forms the heart of the monument. In the permanent exhibition, you can learn all about the history of the complex and hear the stories of the former prisoners. In addition to the permanent exhibition, there are also temporary exhibitions, guided tours and educational programmes for schools and groups. The memorial is therefore not only a place of remembrance, but also of education and raising awareness. It is a place that keeps the story of the war alive for new generations.
Outside the building, a relief carved from white natural stone is mounted on the outer wall, and the grounds feature bronze replicas of the execution crosses and the famous Bourdon bell, which rings out every year during the National Remembrance Day ceremony on 4 May. A visit to the Oranjehotel National Monument leaves a lasting impression and is an unmissable destination for anyone wishing to gain a deeper understanding of Dutch wartime history.
