The panorama is a cylindrical painting measuring no less than 14 metres high and 120 metres in circumference, painted by Hendrik Willem Mesdag in 1881, together with his wife Sientje Mesdag-van Houten and other artists from the Hague School. It shows an amazingly detailed view of Scheveningen and the North Sea, exactly as it looked back then: fishing boats on the beach, the old seaside resort, the dunes, the village, the sea stretching to the horizon.
What makes this panorama so special is not only its size, but above all the illusion of space. Thanks to the daylight that enters through a glass dome and the cleverly designed foreground decor, you almost forget that you are looking at a painting. It feels like you are standing on a dune, with the wind in your hair and the sea in your ears, a 360-degree journey through time.
In addition to the panorama itself, the museum is also a tribute to Mesdag as an artist. In the adjoining rooms, you can discover his other works, gain insight into his techniques and learn about the process behind the panorama. There are also temporary exhibitions on his contemporaries, landscape painting and 19th-century photography.
Panorama Mesdag is not a traditional museum visit, but a sensory surprise that will stay with you. You will experience how a painting can not only show you something, but also transport you to a summer in Scheveningen, far before the pier, far before the flats, far before the present. Perfect for art lovers, families, curious minds and anyone who likes to be amazed.
