The original pier dates back to 1901 and was intended as a wooden promenade for guests of the nearby Kurhaus hotel. After being destroyed in the Second World War, a new, modernist pier was opened in 1961, featuring towers, platforms and a covered walkway. What was once a symbol of luxury and progress is now primarily a playful, accessible hotspot by the sea.
The first thing you notice is, of course, the Ferris wheel, one of the few in the world located above the open sea. From an enclosed gondola, you can look out over the beach, city and horizon. For those who want even more excitement, you can bungee jump or zip line from the tower. But even without the adrenaline rush, the Pier is worth a visit: stroll past art, boutiques and food stalls or sip a cocktail on one of the rooftop terraces with panoramic views.
The Pier is a kind of indoor market above the sea: you will find everything from fresh sushi to loaded fries, cocktails, coffee, street food and surprising desserts. All in a relaxed atmosphere, often with live music and always with a view of the sea or beach. It can be busy in summer, but on an autumn day or at sunset, the Pier has an almost cinematic character.
Whether you come to take photos, celebrate something, entertain the children or just get some fresh air with a portion of chips in your hand, Scheveningen Pier is a place where time seems to stand still. And when you walk back to the boulevard with the sun on your back and salt in your hair, you understand why this place has captured the imagination for generations.
