Designed by Quirinus Harder, the leading lighthouse architect of the 19th century, this cast-iron tower stands over 30 meters tall and has eleven floors. Its strikingly sturdy design was meant to withstand wind, salt, and sand and it still does. Inside, a spiral staircase winds upward past narrow windows and thick walls. While not permanently open to the public, the lighthouse occasionally opens its doors during Open Monument Days or special guided tours.
Originally, the lighthouse used a rotating oil lamp, which has since been replaced by modern technology. Yet its core function remains unchanged: to provide safety for those at sea. In the past, the light was operated manually, now it’s automated, but the romance of the beacon endures. Its light is still visible from more than 30 kilometers offshore.
Although the interior is rarely open to visitors, the views around the lighthouse are spectacular. At its base lies the old harbor, with fishing boats, terraces, and shipyards. Walk toward the beach for a perfect view of the pier, the surf, and the endless blue horizon. The tower is a beloved setting for photography, walks, and stories of storms, ships, and Scheveningen’s local heroes.
The Scheveningen Lighthouse is not a tourist trap or a ticketed attraction, but a silent giant that has seen it all come and go boats, storms, tourists, generations. It watches, shines, and guards, just as it has for more than a century and a half. A small monument with a big story, right in the beating heart of The Hague’s coastline.
