Since 2019, the museum has shaken off its traditional art collection and reopened as a specialist in photography - with a keen eye for socially relevant themes. Twice a year, it presents renowned photographers such as Jimmy Nelson (‘Between the Sea and the Sky’) and Joseph Rodriguez, supported by framing programs for all ages.
The museum is independent, receives no structural government funding and is guided by creativity and entrepreneurship. Young audiences are also taken seriously: workshops, interactive programs and even treasure hunts transform visual language into their own stories.
The elongated courtyard houses a stylish museum café - a transparent space that hosts changing exhibitions and fine meetings. Here, historic stone and modern photography align, with light that awakens both space and senses.
The Museum of Photography at the Vrijthof connects old and new, history and current affairs. It is more than a museum: it is a stage for expressive images and encounters, right in the heart of Maastricht.
