After more than two and a half years of restoration - from 2019 - the station regained its original grandeur. Monumental spaces were stripped of clutter, stained glass and false ceilings disappeared, and the old fountain, murals and tile tableaux shine again in full glory. Of special note is the reopening of the “visitation hall”, once used by customs, now a bright public space with an eye for detail and atmosphere.
The very first station on this site opened its doors on 23 October 1853 as a frontier station outside the city walls, built in wood for defence reasons. The current stone building, in use since 1913 and officially opened in November 2021 upon completion of its restoration, has been a historical landmark ever since. Maastricht station is an important international hub: with daily intercity trains to Alkmaar, regional lines to Aachen and Liège and convenient connections to Venlo and Heerlen.
In addition to the train hub, there is a modern bus platform, ample bicycle parking and a generous “station square” - designed by Ruland Architects - that organically connects city and station with greenery, seating areas and renewed paths.
Step inside and be immersed in a time where grandeur meets functionality. Whether you come for business or tourism, the station offers tranquillity, history and all the conveniences of today. A monument that welcomes you with Limburg hospitality - a perfect start or end to your visit to Maastricht.
