The idea originated back in 2013 when surfer Edwin van Viegen proposed generating an artificial wave in the canal. In 2024, his vision became reality: a 125-metre-long surf pool using natural water from the Rotte river, equipped with state-of-the-art wave technology, powered entirely by wind and solar energy.
A 0.5- to 1.6-metre wave comes every seven seconds, perfectly tailored to your level. Beginners learn in The Bay, where gentle breaking waves calmly wash into the beach house. For experienced surfers, there is The Reef - here you can pull off barrels and higher waves.
For those who prefer to float on the water: canoes and SUPs are available for hire, so you can explore Rotterdam from the water. And after exertion, there is the atmospheric Surfbar & Kitchen, overlooking the water, beach bar classics, sustainable coffee and a covered terrace for groups and events.
RiF010 is much more than a sports venue; it is a living city festival, where sports, nature, sustainability and culture come together. Whether you come to surf, supp, attend a concert or just enjoy sun, music and views. For children, there is a playful pumptrack and a surfing course from 8 years old, complete with lifeguard guidance.
RiF010 is about more than waves - it is a place that brings people together, experiences Rotterdam in a new way, and really makes the city wave.
