The transformation began in 1996. Architectural firm MEI built a tower with two volumes around the old Turbine Hall: a high and a low disc. In 2008, the redeveloped complex was completed: a mix of film studios, offices, live-work units and catering establishments – retaining raw industrial elements such as ventilation pipes and brickwork. The “east side” of the tower has glass facades overlooking the skyline, while the “west side”, with its UFO-like extensions, embraces the harbour area.
Inside, you will find two professional film and television studios where series such as Raymann is Laat and Idols were recorded. In addition, the Turbine Hall – with a ceiling height of around 12 metres and historic overhead cranes – has been transformed into a unique event space that can accommodate up to 700 guests. The Megawatt Hangar and the smaller “Machine Room” and “Switch Room” also offer space for industrial-style parties, conferences or workshops.
The Schiecentrale is part of the urban transformation of Rotterdam South: from industrial site to a neighbourhood full of art, media and gastronomy under tall silos. During events, the Turbinehal even becomes an industrial theatre, with historic stands and twelve units serving as “living rooms”.
The Schiecentrale is not just a building, but a symbol of Rotterdam's resilience and innovation. Whether you are making a film, organising an event or are simply curious, this is the place where the past and future come together – in steel, glass and brick.
