In the 1970s and 1980s, the street had a rough reputation: gambling houses, seedy cafés, brothels - and a nickname as “Wipper the Wip Street”. But thanks to urban renewal and art initiatives, a metamorphosis came. Since the 1990s, Witte de Withstraat has been a mix of galleries, studios and creative spaces, part of the so-called ‘Kunst-As’.
Witte de Withstraat breathes art. Visit Art Institute Melly, TENT, Galerie Ecce and smaller galleries - this is where international and local artists present their work. Street art also catches the eye: colourful murals adorn the side streets, including Daan Botlek's iconic work and the ‘Love Birds’ mural.
Walk down the street, take a seat at a terrace table, be amazed by art in all forms - and absorb the vibrancy that is Rotterdam's own.
