In 1974, the Bimhuis began as a modest jazz venue on the Oude Schans, founded by a group of inspired musicians. Since 2005, it has been housed in a modern, sleekly designed building at the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, right next to Amsterdam Central Station. The characteristic black box floating above the water has since become a recognizable symbol of jazz in Amsterdam.
The Bimhuis is known for its broad programming: from traditional jazz and avant-garde to world music and groundbreaking experiments. Legendary names like Chet Baker, Pat Metheny and Brad Mehldau share the stage here with emerging talent from home and abroad. Every night there is a new musical discovery, in which spontaneity and improvisation take center stage.
What makes the Bimhuis unique is the intimacy of the venue. With perfect acoustics and seating close to the stage, every show feels like a personal experience. And after the concerts? Then the music often continues in the bar, where musicians and audience come together for inspiring after-sessions.
You can easily combine a visit to the Bimhuis with a number of other highlights in the area. Right next to the Bimhuis is the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ. Here classical music and modern compositions come together. In addition, you can take the ferry to Amsterdam-North and visit the Eye Film Museum. Dive into the world of film history and cinematographic art here.
