The DeLaMar theatre has 2 venues and is located on Marnixstraat, close to Leidseplein. The building has had different functions over the years. For instance, it was a school, a warehouse and a repository for data from the German occupiers during World War II. So during the war, it was confiscated by the Germans and later burned by the resistance. After the war, it was reopened as the DeLaMar Theatre, now known as the ‘theatre of the greats’. In 1947, it premiered its first play, Maya. Pretty soon the theatre ran out of money and in 1950 the owners had to give it up. Two years later, the management came into the hands of Wim Sonneveld, who renamed the theatre the New De la Mar Theatre. In 1952, the theatre reopened with the play Het meisje met de grote voeten. Soon the theatre gained national fame for its New Year's Eve conferences. Unfortunately, the theatre closed its doors again in December 2005.
In 2010, the theatre reopened its doors with the help of the VandenEnde Foundation. The VandenEnde Foundation funded the theatre for 10 years to ensure they could appoint their own board of directors. However, there were strict requirements attached to this agreement. For instance, programming had to remain in the style of the old ‘Nieuwe de la Mar’. This meant it had to feature both theatre and cabaret.
At the DeLaMar Theatre, let yourself be carried away by confrontational, compelling or hilarious stories that always have a recognizable edge. Musical backing and outstanding acting skills are never lacking on the stage of the DeLaMar Theatre. It is already certain that you will be speechless afterwards and that the spectacle will stay in your mind for at least a few weeks.
