In 1987, Toneelgroep Amsterdam was founded from a merger of Publiekstheater and Toneelgroep Centrum. The company started with a core of actors put together by a casting consultant. Under the leadership of its then artistic director, Gerardjan Rijnders, Toneelgroep Amsterdam grew into one of the leading companies in the Netherlands in the early 1990s.
The International Theatre is the venue for major theatre festivals, including Brandhaarden and the Dutch Theatre Festival.
