In 1987, Toneelgroep Amsterdam was founded from a merger of Publiekstheater and Toneelgroep Centrum. The company started with a core of actors put together by a casting consultant. Under the leadership of its then artistic director, Gerardjan Rijnders, Toneelgroep Amsterdam grew into one of the leading companies in the Netherlands in the early 1990s.
The International Theatre is the venue for major theatre festivals, including Brandhaarden and the Dutch Theatre Festival. The theatre has its own brasserie where you can have breakfast, lunch, drinks and dinner from early in the morning until late at night. For a sensational and unforgettable theatre experience in the heart of Amsterdam, Internationaal Theater is the right place to be.
In 2001, Toneelgroep Amsterdam got a new artistic director, Ivo van Hove. Under him, the company took on a slightly different format, resulting in a crisis. After this crisis, Van Hove revenged himself. All his plays were positively received by audiences and the press and won several awards.
