NEMO’s collection comprises around 20,000 objects relating to science, technology and innovation. These are objects that demonstrate how technology has repeatedly influenced people’s everyday lives. The collection preserves not only the great inventions, but also the everyday innovations that often became part of our lives without us even noticing.
What makes the storage facility special is that it offers a glimpse into what normally happens behind the scenes at museums. Here, objects are examined, catalogued, conserved and prepared for future exhibitions. Whilst only a selection of the collection is on display at the museum on the Oosterdok, the much bigger story lies within the storage facility. For every object on display, there are dozens of others in storage awaiting research, restoration or a future exhibition. As a result, the depot feels like a vast time capsule of technical innovation.
