Housed in a former shipyard warehouse covering some 8,000 square metres, STRAAT combines the raw energy of the street with the space and focus of a museum. Here, large-scale walls are transformed into works of art, created by artists from all over the world. The result is a place where urban culture, creativity and international art come together under one impressive roof.
STRAAT’s location is just as special as its collection. The museum is situated at the NDSM-werf, once one of the largest shipbuilding sites in the Netherlands. Where enormous ships were once built, the site has, over the past few decades, developed into a creative hub teeming with artists, festivals, studios and cultural initiatives.
What immediately strikes you when you step inside STRAAT is the sheer scale of the artworks. These are not small canvases hanging on a wall. Many of the artworks are just as large as the façades for which they would normally be created. The enormous height of the former warehouse further enhances that effect. What is particularly noteworthy is that many of the works were created specifically for STRAAT. As a result, the collection does not feel like a collection of disparate objects, but rather like a living overview of an art movement that is constantly evolving.
Although graffiti forms a significant part of the collection, STRAAT demonstrates that the contemporary street art scene is much broader than that. Visitors will discover monumental murals, abstract compositions, political statements, portraits and experimental art forms that blur the boundaries between street art and contemporary art. As a result, the museum appeals both to enthusiasts of urban culture and to visitors who would normally be more likely to visit a traditional art museum.
