Long before Amsterdam grew into the cosmopolitan city it is today, this was the edge of the built-up area. The Singelgracht formed the city’s outermost line of defence and, for centuries, marked the boundary between Amsterdam and the surrounding countryside. It was not until the nineteenth century that the city expanded beyond this barrier, giving rise to new neighbourhoods such as Oud-Zuid and De Pijp. The present-day Stadhouderskade was named in 1872 in honour of the stadtholders William II and William III of Orange-Nassau. Prior to that, the route was known as the Buitensingel, referring to its location along the old city boundary.
Anyone walking along the Stadhouderskade is, in effect, strolling through a history book of architecture. In the second half of the nineteenth century, villas, mansions, hotels, schools, churches and commercial buildings were constructed here. As there were relatively few building restrictions at the time, a strikingly varied streetscape emerged.
Some of the city’s best-known landmarks are situated along the Stadhouderskade. The most impressive example is undoubtedly the Rijksmuseum, which, with its towers and distinctive red brickwork, stands like a monumental gateway on the quay. A little further on lies the former Heineken Brewery, where millions of litres of beer were once produced. Today, this historic complex is home to the Heineken Experience, one of Amsterdam’s most popular attractions. The brewery’s presence has left a lasting mark on the surrounding area, including the nearby Marie Heinekenplein.
