The origins of St Servatius' Basilica date back to around 550, when Bishop Monulphus had a burial chapel built over Servatius' grave. Between 1000 and 1150, the present cross basilica rose in Romanesque style, with later Gothic additions - such as the 13th-century southern mountain portal. In the 19th century, Pierre Cuypers restored the church, restoring important Baroque elements to their medieval glory.
The basilica has the largest church treasure in the Netherlands, housed in the medieval Treasury. Here you admire the famous chest of relics of Servatius, his bust, the saint's key and a beautiful collection of reliquaries, liturgical objects and silk fabrics from the 6th century. The relics are carried through the city every seven years during the Heiligdomsvaart.
Besides the impressive thoroughfare with Romanesque columns, the basilica houses special spaces such as the 10th-11th-century crypt, which houses Servatius' tomb, and the serene cloister with the famous 16th-century “Grameer” bell. The southern portal with scenes from the life of Mary and the Stations of the Cross also makes the basilica an art historical gem for lovers of Gothic portals.
Step inside and feel the echo of pilgrims and prayers echoing through these walls for centuries. Be enchanted by gleaming relics, sacred stories and impressive architecture - a monument that seamlessly links religion, art and history.
