The university was founded in 1976, relatively young by Dutch standards. Yet Maastricht feels like it has always been there. Instead of one closed campus, UM is housed in dozens of historical buildings spread throughout the city, from a former monastery on Tongersestraat to a modern learning space in the Sphinxquarter. As a result, the university is literally in the city and the city in the university.
What sets UM apart is Problem-Based Learning (PBL). No long lectures and packed halls, but small groups, a lot of personal responsibility and learning by doing. It attracts students who want to think as well as act. Combine that with English-language programmes, a strong focus on international themes and a multidisciplinary approach and you get why Maastricht is known as a European student city with an open mind.
With more than 20,000 students, half of them from abroad, the university feels like a mini-world in itself. Yet the atmosphere is personal and small-scale. Faculty hotspots such as the Inner City Library, Tapijn, the Student Services Centre or the cosy courtyards of the School of Business and Economics are places where students, lecturers and researchers congregate with laptops, coffee and ideas.
What makes UM special is how seamlessly studying and city life blend together. Over lunch in the park, in the evening on a terrace, or during a city walk - students are everywhere. Maastricht is therefore not a city with a university, but a university that lives in the city. And whether you study law, medicine, psychology or data science: you move through a city for history, hospitality and European flair.
