Once upon a time, Maashaven bustled with activity - loading and unloading, barges from Katendrecht and Tarwewijk unloading their merchandise. Anno now, the barges lie serenely bobbing, as if resting after long service. The bygone silos and warehouses are still there, full of stories of an industrial golden age. It is like walking through the city and instantly hearing the echoes of vanished activity.
The metamorphosis of Maashaven is now in full swing. Since 2018, the site has been excavated, cleared of pollution and prepared for a new chapter: a city park, known as Nelson Mandela Park, stretching over 7 hectares and due for completion in 2028. Ditches full of water taxis will remain, but along the banks will be walking paths, sports fields, playgrounds and green hills with views - places where Katendrecht, Afrikaanderwijk and Tarwewijk can meet.
A soft, inviting vibrancy is also created thanks to Rotterdam Architecture Month, when floating stages and sports boxes adorn the water - playing fields for free runners, skaters and dancers. The metro-D above the quay is adorned with vibrant graffiti, each pillar a piece of street art paying tribute to the neighbourhood and the public realm.
