The story of Krasnapolsky begins with Adolph Wilhelm Kransapolsky, an ambitious Polish tailor who, in 1865, invested his savings in a modest coffee house on Warmoestraat. His vision, entrepreneurial spirit and eye for luxury ensured that the café quickly became a popular meeting place.
In the years that followed, Kransapolsky expanded his business to include adjacent properties and introduced hotel rooms equipped with amenities that were revolutionary at the time, such as hot water and telephones in every room. Around 1880, he commissioned the construction of the iconic Winter Garden: a glass conservatory with a domed roof and palm trees. The use of steel, glass and electric lighting was so innovative that the building was hailed as ‘the wonder of the century’.
Following several extensions and changes of ownership during the 20th century, the hotel was renamed the Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky Amsterdam in 2022, as part of Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas. With this transition, the iconic building acquired a new, international luxury identity, without losing its historic character.
With a history spanning almost 160 years, an exceptional location and a commitment to continuous innovation, the Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky remains one of the city’s most recognisable and beloved hotels. Guests particularly praise the combination of historic grandeur, modern luxury and professional, warm service.
