The name Kalverstraat derives from a calf market that was held here until the early 17th century. At the end of the 19th century, Kalverstraat had several firsts. It was the first street to be paved, the street was the first to get electric lighting and the first public film screening by the Lumière brothers in the Netherlands was held here.
The popular shopping street has around 150 shops. For shops, it is the most expensive rental location in the Netherlands. Kalverstraat is home to a number of retail chains such as, Xenos, H&M and Zara. The V&D store was considered the first real department store in the Netherlands. It was also the first to have lifts and escalators. The offer in Kalverstraat has an emphasis on clothing and fashion through retail chains. Clothing and shoe shops dominate there with around 90 branches. Shopping Sundays have been introduced since 1995.
There are almost no residential properties on Kalverstraat. Shop owners do not want to make space available for a dwelling door and other entrance is often not possible. As a result, many spaces that could have been residences stand empty or are used as warehouses. In fact, most properties have 4 or 5 floors.
There is also an indoor shopping centre on Kalverstraat, called Kalvertoren. Some 30 shops are located here. The mall gets its name from a 30-meter-high tower.
Besides the many shops, Kalverstraat is home to many monuments, including the former Civil Orphanage, the HH Petrus and Paulus Church and the Weeshuispoort.
