The foundations of The Bulldog were laid in 1975, when founder Henk de Vries opened The First – the world’s very first coffee shop – just a stone’s throw from the current hotel location. What began as an act of civil disobedience grew into a global symbol of the Dutch policy of tolerance and the liberal spirit of Amsterdam.
The Bulldog started out in a former sex shop and quickly became a meeting place for locals, travellers, artists and free-thinkers. Building on this history, the brand grew into an internationally renowned name with cafés, coffee shops, merchandise and, eventually, a hotel.
The social hub is the Bulldog Lounge Bar, a smoking-friendly bar where travellers from all over the world come together. With cocktails, simple recipes, live music, DJ nights and a cosy, living-room-like atmosphere, it has been a regular meeting place in the neighbourhood for years. On warm days, the roof terrace offers views over the old town and the canals. During events such as the Red Light Jazz Festival, the hotel even transforms into a stage for live performances, emphasising its role as a cultural hotspot.
The Bulldog Hotel Amsterdam is no ordinary place to stay. It is a living piece of cultural heritage: rebellious, open, colourful and international. Staying at The Bulldog means staying in a chapter of the city itself.
