Madame Tussauds Amsterdam is a wax museum located on Dam Square. It features several wax figures of world-famous people and well-known dutch people from the world of sport, politics or film.
All wax figures are made in London, at Tussauds Studios. It takes around 6 to 12 months to make a wax statue. The statue is first constructed from clay, after a number of posing sessions. A plaster mould is later made from this, which is filled with fibreglass-reinforced plastic for strength. The parts that are not covered are made of wax. Real head hair is used for this and the skin colour is built up using several layers of paint and shades.
Madame Tussauds Amsterdam opened in 1970 at Kalverstraat 156, a national monument. A few years later, in 1991, the museum moved to Dam Square. Where it is now located in part of the building of clothing department store Peek & Cloppenburg. Most sculptures stay here almost forever. A statue may be removed because there has been a fuss about the person.
‘This is more like a show than a museum,’ say visitors to Madame Tussauds in Amsterdam. The effigies of world-famous people are at your disposal to shake hands and have your picture taken. Walk a fashion show with Doutzen Kroes, step into a radio broadcast with Edwin Evers or crawl into the swamp with Fiona from Shrek. Your idols may not be able to give you an autograph, but they are closer than they ever could have been in Hollywood.
