The square was created during the construction period of Amsterdam's ring of canals in 1660. The square is named after the Leidsepoort that stood in the square in 1892 and the beginning of the road to Leiden. Leidseplein was originally built as a wagon square. Visitors from outside the city could park their carts here before going further into the city. From 1875, the square became an important traffic hub with the opening of Amsterdam's first horse tram line (a tram pulled by a horse). Since 1971, the northern part of the square has been car-free and reserved for pedestrians and trams only. In 2017, cars were no longer allowed on the rest of the square either.
Leidseplein is a well-known nightlife area with several terraces, theatres and catering establishments. It is a meeting place for both Amsterdammers and tourists looking for a fun night out. You will also find many street performers and in winter you can skate on an artificial ice rink. On and near Leidseplein are also the pop temples Paradiso and Melkweg. If you're on Leidseplein, it's definitely worth checking out if a good artist is performing at either of these two venues.
