The people of Maastricht are known for their stylish appearance, but during Vastelaovend they pull out all the stops. No simple fancy dress costumes, but pekskes: carefully composed, colourful outfits with make-up, feathers, hats and handmade details. The more creative and unique, the better. It's not about dressing up as something, but about imagination, expression and theatre on the streets.
In the squares, you can hear the sounds of the Zaate Hermeniekes, the street bands that form the heart of Maastricht's carnival. They roam through alleys, cafés and squares, turning the entire city centre into one big open-air stage.
The city programme is organised by De Tempeleers, Maastricht's official carnival association. They secretly choose the City Prince, Zienen Hoegen Hoeglöstegheid, who is revealed a few weeks before carnival. On the Saturday before the three days of carnival, he symbolically receives the key to the city from the mayor. From that moment on, he reigns over Mestreech for three days. Sunday traditionally begins with eleven cannon shots on the Vrijthof and the hoisting of 't Mooswief, the patron saint of the city and the symbol of Maastricht's Vastelaovend.
Nothing characterises Maastricht as much as its street carnival. No indoor halls or closed-off festivals, but a city that opens itself up. The Vrijthof, the Market Square, the Bassin, Wyck: everywhere you go, you will find music, performances and groups of revellers. The highlight is the Grand Parade on Sunday: a colourful procession with floats, marching bands and carnival groups.
The Mestreechter Vastelaovend is a celebration that you experience through colours, sounds, people, and streets. It is an experience that you not only participate in, but also carry in your heart.
